The Best Hiking Trails Near L.A.

Where are the best places to go hiking near Los Angeles?

While most people outside of California picture natives spending all our sunny days at the beach, hiking is actually one of the most popular outdoor activities in SoCal. The mountains and hills provide many and varied places to sneak in an enjoyable workout which is usually rewarded with spectacular vistas. These are just a few of our favorite hikes in LA.

RUNYON CANYON

Possibly the most popular hiking trail in Los Angeles, Runyon offers a little something for everyone. There is a paved path for beginners and a more difficult outer loop, as well as an off-leash area for your dog to enjoy your hike with you. Take this hike to catch a glimpse of downtown Hollywood, WeHo, the high rises of Miracle Mile, and maybe even a celebrity or two. This is one of my personal favorites! I actually recently hiked the trail with my colleague Chris, his wife Diana and their baby daughter Seren. It is great when life merges 2 favorite things of mine — people and place!

ECHO MOUNTAIN

For a more out-of-the-way hike, head to Echo Mountain in the San Gabriels. The hiking itself is tricky, but once you reach the top of the mountain you are rewarded with a beautiful view and a bit of California history. A Civil War veteran attempted to create a resort atop Echo Mountain which would be serviced by the world’s first electric-powered incline railway. Over the years, fires and windstorms have destroyed the buildings and railways, but the ruins are still there for the determined hiker to discover.

MOUNT HOLLYWOOD

Take advantage of the scenic views offered in Griffith Park on the Charlie Turner Trail. Wind your way along the trail, stopping to admire the Hollywood sign, and then continue up to the clearing at the top of Mount Hollywood. From this vantage point you will be able to see the L.A. basin, the Valley, and the DTLA skyline.

SOLSTICE CANYON

This hiking trail in Malibu is an easy walk beside a creek deep in a canyon. Don’t miss the waterfall as it is the highlight of this adventure. This is one of the most family-friendly trails in the Santa Monica mountains so be sure to bring the kids along for this hike.

Now all that’s left is to lace up those hiking boots and hit one of these fabulous trails!
